Getting to Ethiopia involved a 40-minute flight from Detroit to Toronto on Air Canada. After a brief layover, I took a 12-hour flight directly to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines. It was the first time I’ve flown the carrier, and I was impressed with the service from the friendly, efficient crew. The plane was a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Ethiopian Airlines boasts that it was the first carrier outside of Japan to take delivery of a Dreamliner and a few more are on order. The airliner also says it’s the fastest-growing and most-profitable airline in Africa, flying the youngest fleet on the continent, with an average age of 7 years. The company has a new fan in me.
